This is a beautiful 1858 model bull's-eye canteen in virtually flat mint, unissued condition. These are sometimes called "Philadelphia Depot canteens" and they were made in two parts of stamped tin that were soldered together. The Philadelphia Depot produced over 1 1/2 million of these canteens for the U.S. Army. This one retains its cork stopper with iron pull ring and its pewter spout is marked "J. Rohrman, Philada. Pa. Patented December 29, 1864". This is the best unissued example that I've ever laid eyes on. Its original strap looks like it was made yesterday. If you like to buy artifacts and flat mint unissued condition this surely fits the bill.
