CIVIL WAR BRONZE CANNON - Lot #4557

This is another antique bronze cannon with an identical origin to our previously sold item #4538. This one is French and was cast in Strasbourg, France in 1860 under the rule of Napoleon III and his crest is beautifully engraved on the tube. Originally a smooth-bore, it was later rifled and quite possibly done during or just prior to the Civil War. It is about the size of an American Six Pounder Cannon being 63" long from the tip of its cascabel to the end of the bore. It too, would mount on a standard six pounder carriage with some slight adjustment to the trunnion base. It is marked on the right trunnion 336k, which is about 735 pounds in weight. When cast, it was obviously a smooth-bore and is now a 3.5" rifled bore. The left trunnion shows a serial number 70. This cannon could have been captured or purchased by the Confederate government but there is no proof as to how it arrived on this continent.
