COLT 1860 ARMY REVOLVER WITH RARE, NAVY SIZED GRIPS - Lot #4274

Colt Army Revolvers with Navy sized grips are among the rarest of all known Colt variations with probably fewer than 100 manufactured. I say this because I have never noted such a gun with a serial number above 100, and most every Colt book states the same. In addition, this one has the name, "R. E. Day" neatly scratched into the top of its back-strap in script and the same name is stamped lower on the strap and on the butt, but these stampings are very light with some lettering being worn off. This gun is in light brown patina over its entire surface and shows moderate to heavy use. The cylinder scene is all gone and the serial number is faint, but it's there and certainly faint due to being holstered for a very prolonged period of time. The rest of the markings on the gun are good to very good. The grips are original, nice and full but show wear, use and carry as does the entire gun. Extensive research discovered the only R. E. Day that served during the Civil war and he was in the 16th Missouri (CONFEDERATE), which saw action at Pleasant Hill, La, Wilson's Creek, Lone Jack and Helena. They were surrendered with the troops of Kirby Smith in 1865. Very few of this model have ever been offered for sale, with the last two that I am aware of selling for $10,000 - 15,000.00 at auction in similar condition and no identification. This gun is about as rare as it gets, and it has CONFEDERATE HISTORY.
