THOMAS GRISWOLD CONFEDERATE CAVALRY SABER - Lot #4906

This is a wonderful example of a Confederate Cavalry Officers Saber manufactured by Thomas Griswold & Company, New Orleans. These sabers have long been one of the most popular edged weapons in the Civil War collecting field due to their stamped maker markings that allow for easy identification, their decorated hilts and their wonderful solid brass scabbards. They even have a stopped fuller, seldom found on any Confederate edged weapons, made in the finest style of a model 1840 wrist breaker. This example is exceptional, showing a bold and full blade address on its riccaso, just in front of its original leather washer. The blade retains its original finish showing small, occasional specks of corrosion and staining, but no dings or pits. I would rate it a 9.5 for this model and one of the best I've seen. The hilt shows heavy patina with an excellent grip with original leather wrap showing a small flake or two at the front, and a dime sized flake at the rear exposing the wood. The scabbard is nearly perfect, showing a beautiful, untouched butterscotch patina, one extremely slight dent that is nearly imperceptible and a few stains to the reverse (left side). All in all, an excellent example that could easily have commanded $20,000 ten years ago. Swords such as this came down in value during and immediately following the great recession (as did most all other artifacts and art) and they are finally beginning a slow climb back to higher levels. The very best always do. This is a great looking example of one of the most popular Confederate Swords, and the Cavalry Saber has always been a prize for any Civil War Collector, Union or Confederate. Here's a chance to pick up a nice one at a reasonable price that could grow in value for years to come.
