INSCRIBED TO MAJOR BERNARD ROEMER, A CSA OFFICER WHO COMMANDED "ROEMERS ARTILLERY" IN WISE'S LEGION OF VIRGINIA. Bernard Roemer was a personal friend of former Governor and then General Henry Wise and served with him in the early campaigns of the war in the valleys of Virginia. He went on in 1863 to become a surgeon, serving in hospitals throughout the state and is noted in United States Medical records as having operated on many of the Confederate wounded from Gettysburg, most notably for performing documented successfull brain surgeries on the most seriously injured.
