DELUXE ENGRAVED AND PRESENTED COLT ROOT REVOLVER OF EDWARD D. COLT - Lot #4973

This wonderful gun has been in a long-time collection and I cannot recall that it has ever been published. Spectacular in form and condition, it was presented to Edward D. Colt with compliments of the Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company on October 31st, 1867 and is so inscribed on its back-strap. It is one of the most elaborately engraved Colt Root Revolvers ever discovered and was purchased at auction back in 1962 at the estate sale of the former Samuel Pomeroy Colt properties. This is one of two Colt Root Revolvers that were in the estate of Edwards brother, whose large farm and contents were located in Bristol, Rhode Island, the properties now part of a state park. Edward and Samuel were nephews of Colonel Sam L. Colt, founder and inventor of the famous Colt line of firearms beginning in 1836 with the Paterson Firearms Company and eventually The Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company, famous throughout the world. This beautiful gun exhibits almost all of its original, bright and inky-blue finish on its barrel, frame and cylinder (WITH PERFECT, DELUXE HAND ENGRAVED CYLINDER SCENE). Extra foliate scroll treatment to the breech of the cylinder render it as a full-coverage surface. All other surfaces to include the barrel, lever, frame, arbor and hammer display the same amazing scroll-work, and the grips are to die for, checkered ivory without a single flaw. This is one of the best Colts ever discovered with outstanding history to the Colt family, the rarest of all Colt firearms. See our next lot (4972) for another wonderful and identified Colt, the sister to this gun, BOTH OF WHICH RETAIN THEIR ORIGINAL AUCTION TAGS FROM THE S. P. COLT ESTATE !!!!
