WHITNEY NAVY RIFLE, PLYMOUTH RIFLE - Lot #4348

The Whitney Navy Rifle is one of the most beautiful and sought after of Civil War Long Arms. This is possibly the finest condition example of this famed rifle which was contracted for in 1861 and delivery completed in 1864. Stamped boldly on its lock-plate, "Whitney-ville", these were produced at the Whitney Armory near New Haven, Connecticut and is often referred to as a "Plymouth Rifle", "Whitney-ville Rifle" or the 'Dahlgren Rifle". This rifle is a .69 caliber, single shot, two-band muzzleloader. One of only 10,000 rifle produced, this big bore rifle was designed especially for naval boarding parties and shore-landing troops. It comes with its original bayonet and scabbard and is in near mint condition.
