CONFEDERATE CIVIL WAR SWORD By JAMES CONNING. - Lot #0551

In absolutely stunning condition, any collector would have to wait many years to find a similar Confederate sword in such "World-Class" condition. Conning manufactured various styles of swords in Mobile, Alabama throughout the Civil War for the South. Confederate swords of any maker in this condition are extremely rare and almost never encountered outside of major museums and/or collections. A Classic "CS" motif is incorporated within the foliate of the cast brass guard which retains almost all of its original gold gilt on its face. This was obviously a heavier-than-normal plate or wash of the precious metal, probably specially requested by a high-ranking Confederate Officer. Overall, the sword retains about 90% original heavy gold gilt to the brass guard and mounts. The back-stitched leather scabbard is in excellent condition as is the 33" blade which shows much original polish and some staining and untouched patina. Formerly exhibited in the Liberty Heritage Society Museum in Warrenton, Virginia and ex.- Norm Flayderman collection. ONE OF THE FINEST EVER OFFERED FOR SALE.
