The Virginia Manufactory of Arms produced three types of these swords from 1804 - 1821 for the State of Virginia Cavalry, with slight variations to each. This fine condition Virginia Manufactory sword is a third model Horseman's Saber with clip-point blade. It retains most of its original leather grip, has an excellent blade that still shows much bright polish and its scabbard shows 70% original black japanning (paint). Probably a "late" third model, it still shows the bird's head pommel and the scabbard retains its original frog attachment. This one is strongly marked on the top edge of the blade, "2nd Va. Regt.".
